When I post my macro photos on flickr, I get asked a lot about the lens I use and if I recommend it.  I use the 100mm 2.8 macro from Canon.  I like the fact that I don’t have to get right up close to any ‘creepy’ or ‘stinging’ bugs but can if I want to.  It has autofocus and although it can sometimes ‘hunt’ for your subject, it’s a nice sharp and easy to use lens.

At one time I did rent the infamous MPE-65 lens to try it out.  It does NOT have auto-focus but you can shoot up to 5x life-size with that lens.  You do really need a macro ring flash with that lens (especially if you want to shoot over 2x life-size) which I didn’t have and really didn’t want to also invest in.  It was certainly fun to use but was a little too much for me.  The 100mm macro suits me better...
