Photo Of The Day

Just wanted to share a photo of one of my Great Danes, but how can I show one and not the other?  I love them so much, it kills me that at ages 7 and 8 they are considered senior citizens in the dog world.  Great Danes can live to be 12 years old or older, and I hope mine do just that.  They certainly don’t ACT like they are old dogs!

Gunther, 7 year old black and white (mantle) Great Dane.

Duchess, 8 year old white Great Dane.

We adopted Duchess when she was 4 years old from the Humane Society.  Her owner had turned her in because he was moving.  At first everyone thought she was deaf (usually white Danes are) but she wasn’t, she just has selective hearing…kind of like my husband, lol.  Her hobbies include; eating, sleeping, burping, and sitting as close to you as she can, or even sitting on you.

I got Gunther when he was 8 months old from a breeder.  He was a puppy from one of her litters that never sold.  He was completely unsocialized, didn’t know what a leash was, and was just plain scared.  My mom went with me to pick him up and she rode in the back of the SUV with him all the way home.  They do have a special bond now.  We brought him home and had to carry him up two steps because he didn’t know what to do.  He was 80 pounds at 8 months old, thankfully dad was there to help because my husband was out of town.  His first night home I slept on the floor with him.  He was so scared he didn’t pee for 24 hours!  But, with a lot of work…and him bonding with me very quickly, he turned into a great dog!  He’s done two ‘Walks For The Animals‘ in Ft. Lauderdale with the Humane Society Of Broward County, and is an all around great guy.  He does have a fear of strange men, but he LOVES women!  He wasn’t my first dog, but he was my first Great Dane and I love both he and Duchess very much!  Gunther’s hobbies include; eating, sleeping, and sitting on the couch watching TV.  He likes anything on Animal Planet (especially Meerkat Manor!) and also baseball.  Marlins baseball.  He could care less about any other sport, but he does like to watch baseball with my husband.
