Macro images using the ipad

I really wanted to show you a few experiments I did today.  I don’t actually have any kind of tutorial for this, it’s all  trial and error.

I was perusing the app store and saw they had ‘softbox’ apps for the ipad and was intrigued.  I figured, why spend money on an app when all you’re doing is pulling up a photo on the ipad and using that.  So what I did was created a few of my own ‘backgrounds’ (sized 2048 pixels by 2048 pixels) from free images online and sent them to my ipad.  I set up my Canon 7D and Canon 100mm 2.8 macro lens on the tripod and just started to mess around.

I’m sure there’s all kinds of lenses that you could use to create this if you don’t have a macro lens but as long as you pick a lens that allows you to get close enough to your subject without showing the sides of the ipad and gives you a nice depth of field,  it should work for you.  Also, if you have live view on your DSLR and can manually focus with that, you’ll get the best results and sharpest subjects.

Here’s some of the results!

High School Master Lock
