Gettin’ My DIY On
November 21, 2013 Tutorials
I don’t know what happened…but all of a sudden I’m a DIY (do it yourself) mad-woman! I’ve always saved cool DIY projects I’ve run across on Pinterest (see all of my boards HERE) and this month I just decided to start some.
The first thing I ran across on Pinterest was this twig American Flag and I thought, I can do that! I live in southwest Florida, and one thing we have a lot of is the non-native and invasive Florida Holly (or Brazilian Pepper). If you live in Florida too, then you know how hard it is to get rid of this stuff and how fast it can take over fence lines, pastures, etc. So I got a pair of loppers (clippers? Whatever you call them) and started lopping off pieces of holly berry. I really don’t have a tutorial for this, and the link I found on Pinterest doesn’t take you to a tutorial either so I had to wing it. I cut 13 branches all approx. the same size for the ‘stripes’, then two more longer branches to run vertically up the back. I painted all of my twigs (with outdoor acrylic paints), then lashed them together with some twine and viola’…a twig flag which I now have hanging on my oak tree next to my drive way!
My next project, features…more twigs! I started this project very similar to this tutorial HERE…but then it rained and I had to wait for all the twigs outside to dry off so I had to stop for a bit. Then, as I was perusing Pinterest AGAIN…I came across a tutorial about making wall art with twigs. Basically, you cut a shape out of cardboard and fill the whole thing in with twigs. I always like to do a ‘test’ piece first so I cut a really simple heart out of cardboard and proceeded to cover it with twigs. I loved it. Then, I realized it would look adorable on the wreath I had started! In the photo below I haven’t attached the heart to the wreath yet, so it may look a bit off center…basically I had taken a photo of it to decide if I liked it or not. You know how some things look great in person, but then you look at a photo of it and it looks completely different? Not the case here, I loved it…so I’ll be attaching the heart to the wreath shortly….just have to decide if I want to spray paint it or not.
Of course, I’m not done with twigs yet…..and there’s about a million Brazilian Pepper trees on our five acres to cut so I continued on….to twig frames. I had forgotten about a couple of super cheap 5″x7″ frames I had picked up at Ikea awhile back so I took one apart and began to cut twigs and hot glue them onto the frame. I love it. I didn’t have a 5″x7″ photo on hand to put in the frame so I took an image from a book and placed that in there for now…until I buy more printer ink or just have some of my images printed out.
Ok, so I’m still not done with the twigs! I LOVED how much the twig heart came out I went on to the next shape…a star. Again, just cutting a star out of cardboard (from an old box) and filling it up with twigs till I thought it was done.
